The two gods in the bible ! !

Postby The seeker » Sun Feb 14, 2010 12:19 pm

In the name of Allah The Most Merciful and The most Gracious .
As we already know , a christian is ordered to believe in both the old testament and new testament as well .
As far as this everything looks Ok -logically- two books of the same God revealed to two prophets , nothing about it .
However , the probleme manifests itself when we give a curious look on the two books and on how that One deity expresses himself in the two books .
But the result is devastating , here what you get ,
first , the God of the old testament :
a cruel , merciless God , the lord of soldiers , Man of Wars , ordering without mercy of killing every woman , child and animal of the conquered city , a blood bath ! !
3I have commanded my holy ones;I have summoned my warriors to carry out my wrath— those who rejoice in my triumph. 4Listen, a noise on the mountains, like that of a great multitude!  Listen, an uproar among the kingdoms,  like nations massing together!       The LORD Almighty is mustering an army for war. 5They come from faraway lands, from the ends of the heavens— the LORD and the weapons of his wrath—
to destroy the whole country. 6Wail, for the day of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty.[a] 7Because of this, all hands will go limp, every man's heart will melt.
isaiah 13
so Mighty , eh ? !
Evenmore ,
11 I will punish the world for its evil, the wicked for their sins.I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless. 12I will make man scarcer than pure gold, more rare than the gold of Ophir.

isaiah 13
15Whoever is captured will be thrust through; all who are caught will fall by the sword. 16Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be looted and their wives ravished.
same chapter .

in the book of Samuel 1 we read ;
3Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy everything that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.' "

again , pretty mighty and merciless ! .
Secondly , God in New testament ; Jesus christ . The incarnation of God.
A pretty harmless , so kind , so humble and so forgiving , even to the limit of humiliation !
Even from the begining !
7and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
luke 2

and here too
39But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.40And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well
matthew 5
even humiliation ,
67Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him68and said, "Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?
Matthew 15
of course this only scratches the surface !
Now as anyone can see , barely there we have two pictures of God , two contradictory pictures to say the truth ,
one , Mighty , Glorious and utterly perishing his enemies , the second is a humiliated God , so kind and so pacifist.
Now , the question is to every christian , as one who believes in the two testaments - what God of those two is yours ? , I mean when you worship , what Picture of the two do you have in your mind ?
In another direct way , who are you Lying to ? Whether God is Mighty and Glorious that the heavens can not have him and the earth is not worthy to carry his feet , or he is -sorry but this what the bible says- spitted upon , lashed and humiliated ? !
What perception of the word God do you have in your mind ? ! !
Hoping to return back after exams (In Sha' Allah ).
See you then ;D

jAkk my brother. A very interesting topic. Actually I managed to find more than 2 gods in the bible :). Seriously. If you follow through the stories, you'll find several gods, each with his own will, power and ideas of right and wrong. I mean straight ahead, the church tells you there are 3 -all be it they are still somehow magically one, then you read the book and you can come up with about a dozen distinct gods. Of course knowing that most of Christianity was shaped in Egypt and Rome -Egypt more than Rome though most people don't know this- you can immediately understand where this comes from. Both civilizations had dozens of gods that contradicted, faught and murdered one another!

But what's relevant to your topic is that a very known famous christian came up with the same conclusions. His name was Marcion -I'm sure that rings a ton of bells with some readers. He was a second century christian who figured out there are 2 gods in the bible, and that Jesus has nothing to do with the wrathful god of the OT, and therefore christians should worship the God of Jesus -note, not Jesus, but his God- who sent him to free mankind from the wrath of the god of the OT.

Worth mentioning here that Marcion and his followers -named the Marcionites after the founder of their movement- were very successful and their idea convinced a lot of the chirstians at his time. The Marcionite church became a huge threat to the Orthodox church at these early days, and Rome had to interfere shedding blood all over the world to silence this "heresy". I'm talking tens of thousands of murdered christians at that day and age.

Another thing that's worth considering is that at this very early stage of christianity, there were huge battles between christian sects themselves about who their God was. As you can see, the differences are huge. This sect said there were 2 gods, others worshiped 3 distinct gods, others 10 and so on!!!

There's a video on the topic here on the forum I believe. Check it out. Might interest you :)

Welcome back dear brother :) ,
very important addition of you ,
in spite of its being a new info. that you have mentioned , i am not surpriside . I think it's natural result for anyone to come to .
There is noway the two images can merge together , how can god be so mighty and so humiliated at the same time ! ! .
I dont know , but the more the time passes , the more i become sure that no christian has ever read his book , and if so , has not he ever think about that ! .
Hoping to return back after exams (In Sha' Allah ).

This is a question that has dazzled christians since the first century of christianity, and they had to come up with all sorts of explanations to make up for it. Some -like Marcion- who were true believer though they weren't convinced, took a way out by announcing there was more than just one god. Others came up with ridiculous explanations like one I've read recently that says that God didn't know how we felt, so he had to come down to earth as a human to understand!

I wonder if their god had to come down as a cockroach to understand how they felt! Or even as a devil. They are also His creation!!!
